Fecal Floatation

Fecal floatation is a routine test that is used to screen for internal parasites (worms). The test can detect the presence of eggs from mature parasites that are shed in the pet’s stool. Most of these parasites are worm-like, including roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm. However there are other tiny single-celled organisms called protozoa, such as giardia, that may also be detected. Fecal floatation may not always be able to detect the presence of intestinal parasites, therefore may require repeating if they are suspected.

A small, fresh (<24 hours) sample is required for testing, which can be performed in our clinic. We recommend performing multiple fecal floatation test on puppies and kittens as they are more susceptible. We recommend yearly fecal floatation tests on healthy adults. We will also recommend fecal testing on pets that are displaying signs of diarrhea.
